“War is a Racket. [] Looking back on it, I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate his racket in three districts. I operated on three continents.”
– Two time Medal of Honor Recipient United States Marine Corps Major General, Smedley Butler, 1935
In 1951 the United States Air Force initiated the Project for The Semi-Automatic Ground Environment, or SAGE, a real-time Radar Defense Network which ended up costing more than the Manhattan Project and the art of computer programming was essentially invented for SAGE.
The Charter for the Operation of Project Lincoln stated that the Air Force was to build a laboratory where the Massachusetts towns of Bedford, Lexington, and Lincoln meet, resulting in the MIT Lincoln Lab to which many programming languages find their origin, support, or funding. In addition DARPA heavily supports many programming languages.
The following languages are Military “involved”:
- Lisp
- Julia
- Ada
- COBOL
- Haskell
- Python
- via DARPA XDATA program
- Rust
- DARPA program TRACTOR (Translating All C to Rust) is currently funding academic and private researchers to build machine-learning and formal-verification tools to automatically translate the military’s massive legacy C codebases into memory-safe Rust
